Of course there are the rumors of some combo of Petro, Cole, and Perron for Eric Staal.

Can't we just clone Backes instead?

so bucci has a new article up talking about what every team would have to give up for kovalchuk.  here's his section on the blues:

Quote
St. Louis Blues
Proposed trade: The Blues are not making the playoffs and thus would not make any kind of a deal for Kovalchuk. They will certainly kick the tires if the Russian is available over the summer and see whether there is a fit. The Blues can afford a big-ticket item such as Kovalchuk.

I'd miss the playoffs if it guaranteed us Kovalchuk next year.

yeah, at this point you have to just root for the thrashers so that he doesn't get traded and gets to RA this summer.  but i don't really see why we have to miss the playoffs to pick him up.

Bucci saying the Blues wont make the playoffs pretty much guarantees they will challenge the Hawks for the division by the end of the season.

For a guy who loves hockey this dude really is never anyhere even close to right.....he needs to stick to riting articles about his buddy Sjoeanonon Podien.

#4 St. Louis: The Blues are showing some positive signs, but just barely. They need scoring and they need it to likely come from the players already on the team. Players who are having whatever the opposite of a "career year" is. There have been some changes here, and there could be bigger changes by Feb 12. The Blues are talking to many teams right now. Trades could start sooner than later.

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/So-Who-Is-Getting-Close-To-Making-A-Deal--Who-Needs-to/1/25742

Guess that means no trades happening anytime soon.  (however OTT is reporting Kariya might be moving soon)

I keep getting this terrible feeling that Perron is going to end up being the guy that gets traded. Seeing Kariya/Brewer/Boyes traded and getting something helpful in return is too good to be true. If it's not Perron it's going to be Berglund or Petro and one other good prospect.

Management probably feels like they are in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't spot right now." They know they can't stand pat, the fans are about to turn on them, you can't just keep spinning your wheels with the same people making the same mistakes. However, they can't unload the dead weight and get anything worthwhile in return. Every team out there wants our youth. Perron will net the biggest return and every team is probably wearing the Blues out with offers for him. I fear they will deal him, despite the fan backlash, and pray like hell whoever they bring in makes us forget about Perron before this season ends.

I don't like the idea, personally I'd rather stand pat and go ahead and miss the playoffs, then make some moves in the offseason to dump some dead weight and hopefully bring in some talent...and rely on the youth even more next year than we are this year. Bring Petro and Eller and maybe one or two more along if they are ready. If we miss the playoffs again next year, so what. Keep the youth and keep building.

However, I do understand Checketts needs to keep filling seats, and he and most whiny nearsighted fans probably cannot accept missing the playoffs this year and next year again. I can because keeping Perron now and keeping this youth infusion going to me is still the best chance to win a Cup in the next five years, as opposed to just continuing to squeak into the playoffs and get hammered.

Eric Brewer - Blues willing to trade Brewer

The St. Louis Blues are not going to deal their core of young players, which includes David Backes, David Perron, Patrik Berglund and T.J. Oshie. But they may be willing to deal captain Eric Brewer, CBC's Elliotte Friedman writes. This is significant for various reasons. First off, the Blues now have several valuable trade assets on the market, including Brewer, Paul Kariya, Keith Tkachuk, Jay McClement and Carlo Colaiacovo, so a big deal might be on the way. But this also means the Blues are ready to hand over the captaincy to their new wave of talent. There's been a lot of buzz that Backes will be the new captain. (So much for all that trade talk earlier this month.) There was a rumored deal earlier this month with the Canucks that didn't go through, but it appears the Blues are eying a young goaltender.

Turco in the playoffs = Turek in the playoffs.   Yuck.

Oh, and Andy's remark pretty much assures that Kariya is gone.

God Bless You, Elliott Friedman!

Some of the names that aren't mentioned in that blurb are conspicuous by their absence.  You know, some of the names that may actually have value, that we may actually give up in the right deal...Jackman, Polak, Steen, Mason or Conklin or Bishop or Allen, etc.

Yeah, I don't necessarily want to either...but I'd think the regime would be more willing to let go of them than the Backes/Berglund/Perron/Oshie/Eller/Petro/Cole crowd.

I could see Petro and Cole being traded before Polak.  At least Polak has proven he can play in the NHL.

I agree with that, I have gotten the impression that someone or some people in management have lost belief in Petro, and could see him being dealt. I think that would be a huge mistake. Even though the kid is young and raw, there is a ton of potential there, and I don't think he played that bad for us.
