Bergfors, Oduya, a 1st round pick, and Mattias Tedenby are headed to the Thrashers for Kovalchuk.

Looks like the final details are  Kovalchuk and Salmela for Oduya, Bergfors, Cormier and a first.

So Atlanta trades the best player they've ever had, for a package that includes the premier up-and-coming cheap-shot artist in hockey.   I feel sorry for what's left of the Thrashers' fan base -- that dude deserves better.

To make this trade, the Devils went down to Georgia.

I dont think Kovalchuk will play for them next year so the trade is not that terrible.

What would our comparable offer have been?

Young, skilled top-6 forward with upside: Perron/Berglund?

Top-4 d-man: Brewer/Jackman?

1st round pick (rather glad we didn't part with it, tbh)

Shit-disturber prospect: Reaves/Schultz?

Not an enormous price to pay, but it would have been a waste this particular season.

From Strickland's Twitter:

Blues say they were very much in on Kovalchuk talks until the end but wanted a chance to talk to agent before they pulled the trigger.

the only way the blues make that deal is if they sign him long-term.  JD's not retarded.

Thrashers could have got more but refused to let anyone talk to the agent, which tells me the agent would have scared most potential teams away.

I think A comparable package would be:

Perron (Berforgs)
Polak (Oduya)
1st (ours is better than NJ)
McRae (Somewhere around the level of Cormier, minus the damaged goods)

Yeah, you do that if you think you can resign him. I don't think there is any chance in hell we could have resigned him, though. He didn't want to stay in Atlanta for 102m+, he's not going to stay here. He either wants to be on a stacked team that is contending for the cup, or fully intends to go back to russia.

It is going to take some major coin to sign this guy.....i0f the Blues are willing to unass that much dough.....why not sign him as an FA and not lose any players?

This isnt the year for the Blues......
