Defenseman Brian Leetch on Thursday announced his retirement after a long career that saw him win a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers.

Brian Leetch won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1994 when he led the Rangers with 34 points and led New York to the Stanley Cup.
Leetch, a 10-time NHL All-Star and two-time winner of the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman, said after 18 seasons, it was was time to retire.

"I have been fortunate to be an NHL player since 1988. I missed being in the NHL this past season, but believe it was the right time for me to stop playing," he said in a statement released by his agent.

The winner of the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie in 1989, Leetch led the Rangers to the 1994 Stanley Cup, scoring 34 points as the team ended a 54-year Cup drought. He remains the only American-born winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, given to the most valuable player in the playoffs.

In 18 seasons with the Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins, Leetch had 247 goals and 781 assists for 1,028 points in 1,205 games, and 28 goals and 69 assists for 97 points in 95 playoff contests.

"I retire with humble appreciation for all the NHL has given me," Leetch said.

Can you really "retire" if you spent an entire season next to a phone that never rang?  I mean, didn't the entire league make that decision for you?

Yeah but this way he makes it a lot harder to become a Ricky Henderson, holding on to a minor league string in the Frontier League.

All of that being said, Leetch was a class guy who always played the game the way it should be played. I mean, seriously--nobody ever had a bad word to say about the guy (cue the flood of "Brian Leetch molested handicapped dogs," "I heard he was behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi," etc. posts  Wink). Plus, he was an absolute no-brainer in my fantasy drafts for many years.
